A few years ago, my bible study leader shared her family’s Christmas Candle Lighting tradition and I wanted to share it with you. On Christmas Eve, the family goes outside and circles up. Everyone has a candle and a leader starts by lighting their candle and reading a special bible verse. They pass the light to the next family member and paper with a verse for them to read. What a special tradition! She said no matter how crazy or chaotic Christmas Eve is, they make it a priority to step outside and do their Christmas Candle Lighting Ceremony.
What You’ll Need
My bible study leader gave us the 4″ chime candles and the drip protectors so we could do this with our own families. If you’re local to Greenville, you can get those items at Wilsons. If you need to order them, I found them on Amazon: 4″ chime candles and candle drip protectors.
Bible Verses
Here are the verses to read:
Psalm 18:28 You, O Lord, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.
Psalm 19:8 The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart. The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.
Psalm 27:1 The Lords is my light and my salvation–whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life–of whom shall I be afraid?
Psalm 36:5,9 Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heaves, your faithfulness to the skies. For with you is the fountain of life, in your light we see light.
Psalm 89:15 Blessed are those who have learned to acclaim you, who walk in the light of your presence, O Lord.
Matthew 5:14 You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on it’s stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.
John 1:1-5 In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things are made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life and that life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness cannot understand it.
John 8:12 When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.
2 Corinthians 4:6 For God who said “Let light shine out of darkness, made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.”
Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
John 12:35-36 Then Jesus told them “You are going to have the light just a little while longer. Walk while you have the light, before darkness overtakes you. The man who walks in the dark does not know where he is going. Put your trust in the light while you have it, so that you may become sons of light.”
James 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights.
1 John 1:7 If we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.
Ephesians 5:14 Wherefore, he said “Awake thou that sleepest and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give you light.”
Matthew 2:2b We have seen His star in the east and have come to worship Him.
Hundreds of year’s before Christ’s birth, God gave the following words to Isaiah, the prophet, foretelling the birth of Jesus. Isaiah 9:2 and 6…The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death, a light has dawned…..For unto us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Philippians 2:15b Shine like stars in the universe as you hold our the Word of Life!
