Y’all know I am all about making the everyday tasks easier and I cannot tell you how much easier it is to open and close my very heavy drapes now that I have installed drapery wands! Here’s how to install drapery wands so you can have the luxury of opening and closing with ease, too!
What length of Drapery Wand Do I Need?
Drapes are easiest to open and close when you’re pulling them from the top; hence why a drapery wand makes it easier. It allows you to have your hand at the bottom of the wand, but it’s pulling at the top. Drapery wands come in several sizes. To figure out what size you need, reach out and see where you would naturally and easily grab the edge of the curtain. From there, measure that distance to the rod.
That was around 40″ for me, so I chose the 46″ acrylic drapery wands. I figured I would rather have them longer than shorter and eventually small children will need to be able to reach the drapery wands so they can use them, too. I have to reach over my club chairs, too; so extra length is helpful. The acrylic almost disappears too; you barely see the wand!
How to Install Drapery Wands
These drapery wands come with a very easy clip that allows you to simply clip them on the ring. I initially did this, but with the weight of my drapes and the length of the clip, it made the ring more horizontal and it didn’t pull as easily. I took off the clip and attached the part that held that clip directly onto the section of the ring that holds the drapery hook. I pried it open just enough to get the clip off and the drapery ring on and then pinched it back together. It really was that easy! Yes, that eye-hole holds the wand and the first drapery hook.

It’s also important to note that these rods have ring glide tape on the top. All you do is adhere this special ring glide tape to the top and it helps tremendously in having the drapes glide smoothly over the rod, especially the hump from the telescoping part of the rod. Seriously, don’t wait another minute to get the ring glide tape and drapery wands! Opening and closing the drapes so smoothly will change your life!

I have my favorite drapery rods and accessories saved to this Amazon list. In these photos, I am using the Meriville Double Rod with the Meriville 1.5″ rings. You will need that size ring so there’s room for the ring glide tape, too.
