When it comes to picking the right size lampshade, it’s a lot of trial and error. However, I have a general rule of thumb as my starting point: the lampshade diameter should be twice as wide as the diameter of the widest part of the lamp.

From there, I suggest getting a few similar sizes as well. Test them out. Try them on and look at them from across the room from several angles.

Check the Harp Size
Along with trying on the lampshades, you may need to switch up the harp size. Try each shade size with each harp size until you find the perfect combination for your lamp.

When the above situation happens, many people think they need a bigger lampshade, but really they need a shorter or smaller harp.
In my experience testing out harp sizes with shades, you usually need to go smaller than you think. The bottom of the lampshade should be flush with the top of lamp; you should not see the socket and only see minimal parts of the neck. You may think the height of lampshade will correlate with the the appropriate size height of the harp; however, you need to take into account the height of the neck on the lamp! Many vintage lamps from the 60s and 70s have very tall necks from when those super tall lampshades were the trend. If you do that super tall lampshade again, that’s a sure fire way to date the lamp and your decor.
