How to Style a Coffee Table

A friendly follower recently slid into my DMs with a request for how to style coffee tables. This is something I do for clients regularly and thought I could demonstrate on the coffee tables in my home.

I keep it simple and symmetrical for our living room. We use this space so often, so I don’t want too many items that I am constantly resetting.

Some of my favorite items and objects to decorate these surfaces include trays, coffee table books, ginger jars, kleenex boxes with covers, pretty coasters, candles in metallic vessels, etc.

…a rectangular coffee table

To style our living room coffee table, I kept all the colors similar to what I use throughout the room: turquoise, anchors of blue, pops of pink, and touches of chinoiserie elements.

I have to come clean ya’ll. I don’t keep this table looking this tidy all the time! I’m trying to get better at picking up the clutter when I leave the room but I have a tendency to leave my devotional book and bible sitting there, a cup on the coaster, remotes strewn about. That’s one reason I love a tray! If I don’t have time to completely tidy up the entire table, just toss those clutter items in the tray and it’s instantly neater. Hence why I chose a large tray to be the center of our coffee table!

This gorgeous tray is from Post House Design! Currently sold out but I’ll keep you posted if I see it become available again.

To ground each side, I wanted to add some symmetry. I chose a few similar hued and sized coffee table books and topped them each with an object. The kleenex cover is Jayes Studio. I have terrible allergies so kleenexes within arms reach are necessary for every room in my home. The other side is topped with a vintage temple jar. The deep blue color with turquoise and orange further accentuates the color scheme.

I don’t believe the pagoda cover is available any longer, but they have a great variety linked here! I purchased the pink palm tissue cover for my bedroom!
Notice that in both stacks, they are anchored with a blue/green book and then a pop of pink book.

Here’s the books I used on my living room coffee table:

My hot pink agate coaster is linked here. I’d love to get a few more in different colors. You know me…a pop of color and gold all over!

…a round coffee table

Let’s move on to my office aka the champagne studio. I have a round coffee table in here and use similar items, but arrange them differently.

Still using pretty stacks, but concentrating on arranging them in the center of the table.

Because it’s round, I like to group the objects in the center rather than going creating a line down the center of the table.

Again, I repeated colors that are used throughout the room. This space has a softer, pastel palette so my books are pale greens, a touch of yellow, soft greys. But always a pop of pink!

I used two stacks of books to add height. One I topped with a pretty vase. This actually corrals receipts and tags for my business! Another pretty item used to keep me organized. The other stack has a small rose medallion dish and a candle. To finish the space with height, I added my champagne bucket and a bottle of bubbly as a nod to the space’s moniker.

Several of these books are “vintage.” I love finding old coffee table and Southern Living books on Amazon and estate sales. I’m linking what I can here:

This time of year is perfect for restyling our spaces. We’re all looking for something a little new and cleaner after taking down all the Christmas decor. Is coffee table styling something you’re doing as part of a home refresh?
