Let’s talk all about bed pillow arrangement, shams, and inserts! Here’s all the details…
Bed Pillow Arrangement
There are many options for bed pillow arrangements, but my favorite formula is a classic sham and a decorative pillow in front (or possibly two pillows but not too many). The shams give that clean and crisp hotel vibe while a decorative pillow provides character and showcases your style. It’s the ideal combination!

In our bedroom, I chose three euro shams and one bolster. The height of the euro shams plays well with the height of the mattress and the posts. The single bolster adds a punch of color and pattern across the bed and brings out the vivid coral in the drapes, too. It’s also only four total decorative pillows that need to be removed. I knew I would have to keep this number to a minimum to satisfy my husband.
Insert Size
No matter what type of pillow you’re stuffing, you want the insert to be at least one size bigger than the pillow, that’s usually 2 inches bigger. For example, these shams are 26″ euro size. I used a 28″ insert to give them a more full look. You could even go bigger to a 30″ insert if you want them super full and firm. I wanted mine to be a little choppable and the 28″ insert allows that nicely; it also adds to the luxurious hotel vibe, too!
