My favorite bamboo blinds are currently on sale, and I thought this would be a great time to share how to measure for outside mount bamboo blinds:

- I prefer OUTSIDE MOUNT bamboo blinds for two reasons. First, my older home has new windows in old window casings. As new windows were installed, additional filler moldings were installed so they have a proper fit. There is not enough depth to even mount interior hardware for an inside mount. Second, hanging the bamboo blinds above the window gives the illusion of a bigger window (the same reason you hang your drapes higher than the window).
- It allows more light to flow in when the bamboo blinds are raised. When you use any kind of shade or blinds and open them, there’s several inches of the material bunched at the top. By mounting above the window molding, you can raise the blinds to the very top of the window and let more light in.
- Knowing these items, begin measuring. To get the height, measure from the bottom of the drapery rod hardware to the bottom of the window molding. You want to be sure you cover the full window (no crevice or crack of light); especially if you’re needing these to be blackout. To get the width, measure from side end of molding to other side end of molding.
- On both lengths, I usually round up to the nearest whole number. If it overhangs by a quarter of an inch or so on the side, it doesn’t bother me. The edge of my drapes cover the end of the bamboo blinds anyway.
My Favorite Bamboo Blinds
I am gradually adding these bamboo blinds to my bedrooms and bathrooms as I update each space. I have the Antigua Natural finish, with the blackout lining, in the cordless option. I do not do edge binding. On the justblinds.com website, scroll over shades on the top menu and select “woven wood shades.” from there, you can enter your dimensions and then select your finishes.

The blackout lining and cordless are additional fees, but I have found it well worth it! The blackout dramatically helps with insulating, particularly in the summer months. When it’s 100 degrees outside, we leave these fully closed in our bedroom and I think it keeps that room 5 degrees cooler than the rest of the house. Hence, a reason we are adding them to more windows–worth the investment! The cordless feature is so nice on something that you open and close everyday. Just grab the bottom and raise up or pull down!
