Master Bedroom Window Decor

I love gorgeous drapes on windows, but as a designer, I know there is much more thought that goes into the design decisions other than picking a drapery fabric. So let’s walk through those choices in my master bedroom window decor.

Drapery Decisions

The fabric was my starting point. I found this fabric at a closeout warehouse and purchased a lot of it. At the time, I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it, but I knew I needed it in my house. I had drapes made and I absolutely love them in my bedroom.

I chose to have my drapes lined in blackout fabric. In my opinion it adds a bit of weight to the drape and they hang better. It also helps with sun fading and of course, you can close them and it’s completely dark in your room.

Bamboo Blinds

I chose to add the bamboo blinds for a few reasons. First, it adds texture and tones. Second, they are blackout further help with privacy and energy efficiency. As the days were so hot last week, we kept these blinds closed and it seriously helps our room feel much cooler. Finally, related to staying cooler, I can close these over my window for privacy and keep my drapes open. The drapes being open is critical because our air vent is right below the window!

With our old drapes, we were closing the drapes and propping the bottom up on stool so that air would still flow when the drapes closed. It worked, but not something we wanted to do long term.

French Return Drapery Rods

With so much traditional elements in the room (four poster bed, grasscloth walls, floral drapes), we needed a touch of modern. The French Return Drapery Rod is the perfect solution. I purchased mine from Carolina Fabric. Even if you’re not local, I highly suggest giving them a call. They are so nice and friendly and they can ship too!

One thing to note when you’re selecting drapery rods…If you do want your drapes to open and close on a regular basis, I highly suggest getting a rod that is not a telescoping/adjustable rod. I speak from experience; those rods are so annoying to get rings over the telescoping part. These rods from Carolina Fabric are custom cut to the length you need and it such a difference in gliding rings across a smooth rod.

Designer Tip

I know many of us are familiar with hanging rods higher and wider, but I do want to reiterate this concept. Hang your drapes as high as you possibly can! I also hung my bamboo shades about seven inches above the window, too. Go as high as you can! It will make all the difference in your window decor!
